What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a treatment in which the essential oils of plants are used in massaging the body to relieve ailments.

Essential oils are natural substances, which are extracted by various means from plants, flowers, shrubs and trees, resulting in a highly concentrated fluid.

Treatment

The treatment starts with a full consultation where a full medical history will be taken and any relevant information discussed.

The massage used during the treatment is gentle and soothing allowing the essential oils to be absorbed into the skin.

The patient's well being and comfort are always treated as a priority throughout this pleasant and relaxing form of encouragement of natural healing, a gentle touch towards good health.

History of Aromatherapy

Essential oils or aromatic oils as applied to the human body go so far back that their beginnings have been lost in antiquity.

One of the oldest medical books written by the emperor Ki Wang-Ti refers to several essential oils whose properties he recognised. This is just one of the examples to date. There are, in addition, references from Egypt, Assyria, Arabia and India. The ancient Greeks and Romans also made extensive use of these pleasant substances.Going on through time and travelling through Europe until we reach the 21st Century we now find them widely used in the form known today as Aromatherapy.

How can Aromatherapy help?

The effects of essential oils are wide ranging. They may be used to alleviate stress, anxiety and related conditions. The effects can be extremely beneficial, for example, helping cells to regenerate. Many oils are anti-bacterial/anti-viral to help ward off disease and promote healing. They can be used to help regulate hormone imbalances, and some have anti-depressant qualities. Both acute and chronic conditions can be treated in this way, which can respond positively, some almost immediately, while others may take longer to produce a more balanced all round effect. In fact, essential oils have many therapeutic values which makes them a powerful and pleasant tool in encouraging the self-healing abilities of the human body. With each treatment the oils are blended to suit the individual's requirements, which makes aromatherapy a unique and specialised treatment.
